Midterm Reflection

My midterm critique helped me work through some of the issues that I have been having. During my artist research I have been noticing artists that seem to be able to put in less work than I do in their projects. I had begun to think maybe I was overworking my paintings and missing the opportunity to see a stopping point. This caused me to do some works that acted as departures from my previous abstractions. The works I did felt strange to me as I hung them up. When we discussed them they were not widely popular, but there was something to be learned from both of them. I had one piece that was spray painted and layered in a small area, and that piece helped me to realize the power that comes from layering and texturing my entire pieces. One person said that the materials seemed to meld into something more than a painting on canvas when they are worked to a severe degree. The other piece I did helped me see a new direction with a slightly askewed rectangle inside another rectangle and where as the piece was not an overall finished work, I believe I will use this technique again in the future.
The best part of the day for me was hanging up my five earliest pieces and seeing them all together. It seemed unified and very satisfying as a unified body of work. I think this semester is going well so far and I hope to continue my momentum for the rest of the semester and hopefully the rest of the year.
