10/19—What artwork would you want to do?
I have always wanted to do an extremely large sculpture. I would work in the abstract trying to make the appearance of decay and beaten down textures. The idea has just always been incredibly appealing to me to make a small model of something and be able to afford turning that model over to a foundry. To have someone else have to deal with the fine details and I just get to handle the “big picture” sounds fantastic. It would be nice to have something on a large scale in a nice place that I could take my parents to see. They are not people who have much respect for art, but for some reason they always love those gross public art sculptures outside banks. No accounting for taste I guess.
As far as specifics for the project. I imagine being given one of the facades of a corporate building and being able to make it look like a mass of mangled, melting, bubbling, festering, copper was pouring down the side of the building. I imagine the patina color pallet going from a dark brown to a metallic gold with little moments of copper green.
I do worry what being financially able to engage in a large scale project with assistants would do to my ego as an artist, and as a man. I have known a few people who have gotten grants to do things like this and they instantly become megalomaniacs, believing in their own hype. This of course leaves a horrible after effect when they are expected to return to their regular daily existence in their home studio with no grant or assistants to follow. I have seen it ruin someone to the point that they could no longer work, believing that small scale solo work was now below them. Scary!!
