10/12—What if your work were installation, sculpture, video, etc.?
I have never engaged in any of these forms of artwork outside of introductory level classes as an undergrad. I would love to add more sculptural elements to my paintings, but I get the feeling that this assignment is about pushing even further than that. I believe I would like to add video installations to my work. I could add videos of the things that inspire my paintings as well as the unique way that I work. I imagine it being set up with a tv to the left with a home movie of a stumbling drunk or a street addict struggling to keep his balance as we see on a daily basis in our city. In the center would be one of my paintings which was inspired by the content of the first video. Finally, on the right would be a video of me in my studio which I think would lend itself well to video art. I tend to sit and stare at the work in progress until my mind comes up with a clear vision of the next addition or subtraction to be done to the piece. Visually it would be me sitting in a chair for extended periods of time, but that would be broken up with moments of fervent action which usually results in a complete change of the piece. Due to the yin and yang of these two extreme scenes (sitting still, working almost violently) I have always thought my style of working in the studio would lend itself to video presentation.
An idea for an installation I had while writing this was to have a small room with some of my paintings hanging on a wall, but have the doorway blocked off with some sort of “DO NOT ENTER: HAZERDOUS” signs. People would have to take turns viewing from a distance and I think it would have a strong effect on the experience of the work overall
